"Adiabatic Process"

1...Adiabatic Process...The physical change without the gain or loss of heat. 2...The dry adiabatic lapse rate is 5 Degs. F., or 3 Degs. C. per 1,000 Ft. 3...The moist adiabatic lapse rate of air is 3 ddegs. F., or 1.5 degs. C. per 1,000 Ft. 4... A parcel of air expands and cools as it rises due to lower pressure. The molecules move farther apart and do not bump in one another as often as the parcel rises, thisic why snow falls at high elevations. 5...A parcel of air expressed as 1 cubic foot of air.

"Explaination Of The Adiabatic Process"

Step 1. We start with a parcel of air at the surface with a temperature of 50 degrees F. A dewpoint of 0 Degrees F.
We force the parcel up at the dry adiabatic lapse rate of 5 Degress F. per 1,000 feet. (Expansional Cool) At 10,000 feet the parcel becomes saturated, (100% humidity) The temperature of the parcel now at 10,000 feet is 0 Degrees F.


Step 2. We contine to force the parcel up to 15,000 feet at the moist diabatic lapse rate of 3 Degrees F. per 1,000 feet. The temperature of the parcel now at 15,000 feet is -15 Degrees F.


Step 3. We now force the parcel all the way back down to the surface, (Compressional Warming), at the dry adiabatic lapse rate of 5 Degrees F. per 1,000 feet. The temperature of the parcel of air now at the surface is 60 Degree F. This is called the Potential Temperature. "NOTE" A parcel of air is considered to be 1 cubic foot.


"Adiabatic Process"

Expansional Cooling or Compressional Warming of air parcels in which there is no not heat exchange between the air parcels and the surrounding air.
