Things You Can Do During Times Of Flooding.

1. Flood and Flash Flood Warnings are issed by the National Weather Service. 2. When a "Flood or Flash Flood Watch" has been issued, Be alert to the signs of flooding and be ready to leave the area at a mome 3. When a "FLOOD or Flash Flood Warning" has been issued, Act quickly to save yourself. "YOU MAY ONLY HAVE SECONDS"


"What To Do When Driving"

1. Do not drive through water that is on or running over roads. 2. Do not drive under overpasses which are flooded. 3. 2 feet of water can flow away most automobiles. 4. Go to higher ground. Climb to safety. 5. Leave the areas that are prone to flooding. Low areas on the road, under bridges, washes, dips. 6. If you are driving and your vehicle stalls, leave it immediately and get to hight ground. 7. Do not camp or park in areas that are prone to flooding. 8. Be very alert at night for signs of flooding.

"How To Be Prepared For Floods & Flash Floods"

1. Plan Ahead: Know where to go if you are told to evacuate your area or home. 2. Choose several places such as a family member or friends home. Shelter, Hotel or Motel not in the flooded area. 3. Know where to go to get to higher ground. 4. If you are not in the flooded area and the power goes out due to flooding, keep a portable radio with extra batteries on hand. 5. Keep some type of canned food on hand or food that does not have to be cooked. Shop ahead of time. 6. Keep warm blankets available. 7. Keep enough of you prescription drugs on hand in case you cannot get to a store. 8. If you have a cell phone, keep the battey charged. Know the emergency and family phone numbers. 9. Keep you valuables such as insurance papers and others ina place easy to get to in case you must evacuate and take them with you. 10. Have some monet on hand. 1. "EVACUATE YOUR CAR, YOUR HOME EMMIATELY" 2. Look for higher ground. 3. Move to a safe area before you are cut off from flooding. 4. Monitor the latest information provided by any emergency broadcast station. 6. If you have a protable radio, take it with you along with some batteries. 7. If you have a cell phone take it with you and a list of emergency and family phone numbers.

"What To Do Before A Flood Or Flash Flood"

1. Flooding usually occurs about 6 hours after a heavy rain event. 2. Be prepared for flooding which may last a week or more. 3. Learn about the area in which you live as far as flooding is concerned. 4. As little as six inches of running water can knock you down and carry you away. 5. Never walk through or drive through swift running water. 6. People have been killed walking and driving through fast moving water. 7. Learn your areas flood risk and potential. 8. Make sure you car or cars have enough fuel. 9. Learn your evacuation routes. 10. Store some drinking water. 11. Keep some food on hand that does not require cooking or refrigeration. 12. Keep first aid supplies on hand. 13. Have a portable radio on hand along with more batteries. 14. Have some emergency cooking equipment and flashlights in working order. 15. Listen to "NOAA WEATHER RADIO & LOCAL TV & RADIO STATIONS" for the latest weather information. 16. Keep the battery to your mobile phone well charged.

1. Most homeowner's insurance does not cover looding. 2. Contact your insurance company to check to see if you have flood insurance. 3. Check with your insurance company to see how to purchase "FLOOD INSURANCE." 4. "FLOOD INSURANCE" is purchased separate from "HOME OWNER'S INSURANCE".

"Flood History From The National Weather Service"

1. May 31, 1889...Johnstown, Pa. Worst flood in the history of the United States. 36 to 40 feet wall of water...2,200 dead. 2. December 1991 to January 1992...South Central Texas...Wide spread river flooding on the Guagalupe...Brazos...Trinity...& Colorado River Basins...17 inches of rain fell. 15 dead... Damage in the hundreds of millions of dollars. 3. Flash Flood...June 14, 1990...Shadyside, Ohio...4 inches or rain in less than 2 hours produced a 30 foot high wall of water... 26 dead...Damage 6 to 8 million dollars. 4. Aug. 1, 1985...Cheyenne, Wyoming...6 inches of rain in 3 hours. 12 dead...damage 61 million dollars.
